Four Ways to Prepare for Your Branding Photoshoot

1. Narrow down the feeling that you want your photos to express

Your brand is really just the way people feel when they hear your name and think of you. Do they think of someone who is fun-loving and free-spirited, or organized and type-A? No matter who you are, it is important that you show that to the world so that you can attract clients who will mesh well with you!

There are a few things that you will be asked to think about in your questionnaire, and that we will discuss in your zoom consultation. These are: How would your friends describe your personality? What pain point do you solve for your customers? What makes you different than your competitors? Answering these three questions will help us identify the feelings that are most important to represent in your photos.

Once we identify your feelings, we will use these to choose outfits, backdrops, lighting technique…everything! Whether you’re an elegant romantic or a sarcastic badass, we will make sure it shows through in every image.

2. Identify your color palette

Identifying some basic colors that you’d like to plan your session around early on will help you plan your outfits and choose accessories to bring along. I recommend sticking with mostly (or all) neutrals, as they are the most versatile, flattering and timeless. Along with those neutrals, you can pull in a bolder color or black if you’re not a color-loving gal. Your colors should support your personality and the feeling you want to project (for example: neon pink is bold and fun, where chestnut is warm and reliable).

In addition to the studio walls as well as black and white backdrops, we have the colors shown below that can be used during your session.

3. Choose outfits

Of course, outfits are the most stressful part for most of us. But if you focus on flattering your body, it can be a lot of fun and actually make you excited for your session!

Identify the parts of your body that you like the most. For many of us who are not physically where we want to be, that would include the smallest part of our waist, and our shoulders/decellotage. Look for styles that will highlight THOSE parts of your body and skim over the parts you don’t love as much. Don’t be afraid to size up so the outfits fit well and don’t dig in to your body. If you’re self conscious about your weight, opt for styles that don’t cling. Layers like blazers and cardigans can be a great way to add variety without fully changing outfits.

In addition to looking for flattering styles, I always recommend getting some variety in your styles. For the ultimate amount of content, I recommend planning one dressier/fancier outfit, one that is more inline with your real life style but elevated, and one casual or cozy look.

4.Gather accessories and props

Accessories and props are a great way to personalize your session to you. What are some items that you are never without? Maybe it’s your signature Nike sneakers or giant Stanley water bottle? Whatever it is, bring it along! We do have an assortment of items at the studio that can be used, but it is always great to bring things that really fit your brand.

Here is a list of some of the types of props you can consider bringing/buying.

  • phone, laptop

  • journal, notebook

  • coffee table books

  • tools used within your professional

  • mug or water bottle

  • printouts used within your work or print outs of quotes (use those brand colors)

  • cut outs from magazines

  • large artwork to prop on desk

  • jewelry

Last but not least, be sure to splurge on anything that is going to help you feel your best! Professional hair and makeup, nails, and a subtle spray tan are all popular ways to love the way you look on the day of.
